Heading into the only foreign race weekend of the 2019 Super GT at Buriram, Thailand . Thong seeks to continue his points finishing strike since Round.2 from Fuji Speedway in May.

On Saturday Shaun qualified 2nd overall during Q1 with less than 0.1s off pole position, which marks his best qualifying position this season so far and his 4th consecutive Top 16 qualifying result. Thong’s teammate Lee then qualified 10th in Q2 which determine the starting grid for the main race on Sunday. Marchy Lee took the start on Sunday and made his way up to 8th position at one point before tire degradation hits hard on the #33 X Works Nismo GT-R. Thong took over the car in position 11th and rejoined the field at position 14th after the driver change with 36 laps to go.

With the benefit of a safety car after the pitstop, Thong showed top pace during the stint and fought his way up to 6th place with just 2 seconds behind 4th and 5th place during the checkered flag. Thong said “It was definitely one of my best stints so far, the car performed so well and the key point to this was the tire management since the out-lap. I knew from past experience that Chang International Circuit is a relatively high grained circuit and extremely hot in track temperature, so looking after the tires will be my main focus and will benefit the performance at the closing stage which once again was proven today. Thank you X Works and Nismo for providing a really competitive car as well.”

With a strong 6th place finish in Thailand, Thong is now standing 12th in the drivers championship with 10 points in total. The next event will see Super GT heading back to Fuji Speedway once again for the 500 Miles endurance race from 3rd - 4th of August.

After a disastrous weekend at Okayama for Thong and X Work Racing’s debut which saw the #33 Eva Unit-01 Nismo Gtr GT3 caught in an unavoidable accident. Shaun and his teammates bounce back to score a 7th place finish at Fuji 500km and sets the history for being the first ever international team to score points in Super GT history !!

On Saturday Shaun Thong put his Eva GT-R in 8th place in Q1 out of 29 GT300 entries, scoring his second consecutive Top 16 Q1 result to bring the car into Q2 for teammate Marchy Lee. Lee then qualified 15th with a Medium - Hard compound Yokohama tires.

On race day the weather once again hit us hard with unstable conditions near the start, rain started to land with less than 10 minutes to green flag and Thong who was given the role to start held his position well despite horrendous conditions and made no mistakes. The team kept Thong out with wet tires until lap 45 where the tracked started to dry up. Shinya Michimi then handled the second stint which the #33 GT-R fought all the way from 15th to 7th and finally Marchy Lee taking the checkered flag in 7th with just 0.149s behind 6th place.

“It was a relief for myself and everyone in X Works and EVA Racing, we had such a bad luck in Okayama and at one point we were worried about not making into this race as the team has to fit in a new chassis after the accident. Hence the mechanics and staff in Nismo helped us a lot to provide us a flawless car this week.”

“Right now i couldn’t express how happy i am and the team is, this 7th place finish means a lot to us as a new team here in Super GT. All drivers did their stint in the best way possible while the mechanics also executed all pitstops without a single mistake, hence this result belongs to every single personnel within the team and no one could have achieved this alone !”

It was an eventful weekend in Sepang International Circuit for Shaun Thong in his Thailand Super Series debut to take home a second and third place finish in the 2013 Audi R8 LMS Ultra racing against newer generations of GT3 machines together with teammate Sandy Stuvik.

The #2 B-Quik Racing R8 LMS Ultra started from Pole Position in Race 1 and remains in the race lead until Shaun’s teammate Sandy had a slow puncture which cost the pair the race lead before the pit window slot. Thong rejoins the field at 8th position after the pitstop with a 52 seconds pitstop time surplus to their competitors due to the Silver - Silver driver lineup pairing. Thong pushes his R8 LMS Ultra to the limit and fight back from 8th to 2nd to score his debut podium with B-quik Racing.

“First of all i am very happy to have City of Dreams from Penang supporting me for the Thailand Super Series debut here at Sepang, Malaysia. Without them i wouldn’t be here racing this week with B-Quik Racing and it is my pleasure to be on the podium together with them in both our debut. The race was tricky as it is not easy at all to race against the newer generations of GT3 cars, however me and Sandy we both did our best to maximise the performance from the R8 LMS Ultra and i think we put up a really good fight against all the other competitors considering the extra 52 seconds we have to compensate during the pitstop.” Said Thong.

In Race 2 the City of Dreams supported #2 B-Quik Racing R8 LMS Ultra crossed the line in 3rd place with just 0.139 seconds behind 2nd place’s Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo to complete a double podium finish for Shaun.

Thong expressed “The start was super close and i almost took the race lead but our competitors has a better car with better braking performance. I was on the limit for the whole first stint and Sandy also made a superb stint to recover our pitstop deficit. It is my first race in the championship and with the team hence i am very pleased to be scoring this result considering we are racing an older generation GT3 car.”

“So far the deal is one-off and thank you Ewein Zenith, the developer of City of Dreams in Penang for supporting me here in their home race. I am looking forward to work again with them and also i believe from our driver pairing there is a good chance for us to fight for the 2019 title !” Thong explained.

Thong now stands 3rd in the Thailand Super Series GT3 championship with 33 Points, next race of the TSS championship will head back to Thailand’s Buriram Circuit in June, followed up by the famous Bangsaen Street Circuit and ending again in Buriram.

Shaun Thong's Super GT Debut Interrupted By Rain Affected Red Flag

2019 Super GT

Okayama International Circuit April 13 - 14, 2019

WhatsApp Image 2019-04-14 at 2.48.32 PM.jpeg

On Saturday Shaun Thong and Marchy Lee’s #33 Eva RT Unit-01 GTR by X Works made into Top 16 in Qualifying 1 with Thong setting a 1:26:272 which put the #33 Nissan GT-R GT3 Nismo in 7th place. Lee then qualified 15th in Q2 which was ultimately the starting order for Sunday’s main race out of 29 GT300 entries.

However Sunday shows a complete opposite of weather situation, the track was hampered by continuous downpour and cold temperature. Lee started the race and green flag situation did not last long until front runners in the GT300 class caused a 7 laps long safety car period, shortly after the restart Thong’s race ended in lap 13 with Lee behind the wheel after a multiple car accident involving #10 GT-R, #7 Aston Martin, #48 GT-R and the #33 Eva Unit-01 GT-R by X Works.

WhatsApp Image 2019-04-15 at 2.35.18 PM.jpeg

Lee said “It was unfortunate and there was no way i could have avoided the accident, I went to the left because i saw there was a damaged car and barrier all over the track but i did not expect the debris went across the track, ultimately i hit one of the wheel of either the GT-R or Aston Martin who were involved in an earlier accident just split seconds in front of me and my car was damaged from the impact and lost steering, from there on I was just a passenger in the car".”

I am glad to know that Marchy was good after the impact and was unharmed said Thong. He added “Under these conditions it is extremely tricky even for top drivers and Okayama is a very tight circuit and with 44 cars racing at the same time, the spray from the car in front really hinders the visibility and at the end of the day everyone is pushing to their limit from the cockpit. It is definitely not the debut me and the team were looking forward to but motorsport is always unpredictable, we will work our way back and be stronger in Fuji for the second race.”

The race was eventually red flagged for the second time after the restart following another accident involving the an AMG GT3, the race was ultimately red flagged and stopped due to the heavy downpour and half points were rewarded for the result.
